Health in the office
Too many times we hear what’s bad for our health: tv shows and magazines are often filled with “don’t do this”, “don’t do that”, but they lack in recommending us something that is actually good for our health.
We all have a number of good and bad habits, while it is good to have someone point out what we should avoid, it’s important to find also something good that we can do that’s not just quitting bad habits.
Most of us sit at a desk for eight hours or more every day: this sedentary lifestyle is one of your worst enemies and you should avoid it like the plague: as in any other thing the hardest part is changing the habits that you had for years.
Nobody pretends that you go from sitting at a desk 9 hours a day to run like a marathon athlete in a week: the most important aspect of the change you’re approaching is understanding that physical exercise is fundamental.
There are a variety of ways to do physical exercise:
- Go running after work: if you happen to live in walking distance from a park or in a not so polluted area you can go running. If you have a completely sedentary life you might consider starting just walking.
Do it regularly, after a week try to alternate walking and slow running. You don’t need to run fast, you should rather run slowly and regularly to keep your heart rate regular and not too fast.
- Go walking: if you don’t want to run then going for a walk is far better than the couch! Regular walks during the week help you burn calories and enhance blood circulation.
- Take the dog for a walk: if you have a dog this is an excellent chance to do something for your health and to spend some time with your beloved friend! One walk in the morning before going to work and possibly one at night will benefit the dog, your and your relationship!
- These are just three suggestions, but there are obviously endless possibilities.
Another very important thing is eating right, you’ve heard this thousands of times, but you end up eating always the same junk; well, it’s time to quit and eat better: good news? you’ll love it!
- You can eat better at the office: it’s written nowhere that you can eat only snacks and sandwiches when you’re at work. If you work with someone serious about body shape, that goes to the gym or is a bodybuilder of any level, you know he doesn’t eat like you. He manages to eat vegetables and meat at work: not properly heated and prepared the night before this stuff doesn’t taste that good but the important is that he eats better than you. Once you start and get used to it you’ll be proud of your new eating habits.
Some good food to eat at work is:
- Chicken
- Tuna
- Salad
- Vegetables ( canned beans, canned green beans, maize, zucchini etc ) are good and some of them don’t even need to be prepared.
- Mozzarella cheese or cottage cheese
- Fruit ( you can easily eat fruit as a snack during the day )
There’s a variety of theories and studies about what you should eat and what you shouldn’t, low carb, low fat, high protein foods and so on: thing is, if you’re eating snacks and sandwiches, anything is better.
Another thing from which your body will hugely benefit is drinking lots of water and it’s really easy to do it at work: drink water throughout the entire day.
Last but not least: office life tends to isolate us, we stare at the monitor all day long and it happens that we don’t even talk with our coworkers for hours. This behavior often continues when we go home: we may not realize it but we tend to isolate ourselves and this isn’t good for our health nor for those who care about us.
